The 5 Best Animal Hospitals in Philadelphia for Trusted Pet Care

best-animal-hospitals-philadelphia
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Emergency Accessibility: We prioritized hospitals that offer flexible hours, 24/7 coverage, or practical urgent care options. Access matters when accidents or sudden symptoms cannot wait until the next day.

Range of Services: We looked for facilities that can handle more than basic wellness checks. Clinics with surgery, dentistry, diagnostics, rehabilitation, or specialty care make the process easier for pet owners.

Diagnostic Capabilities: Fast answers can make a big difference when a pet is sick. We gave extra weight to hospitals with in-house labs, imaging, or access to advanced testing.

Staff Expertise: We considered the experience of the veterinarians, technicians, and specialty teams. Practices with board-certified specialists or long-standing local teams stood out more.

Client Communication: Clear explanations help families make better decisions under pressure. We looked for clinics that communicate treatment plans, costs, and home-care instructions in a practical way.

Finding reliable healthcare for our pets is a top priority for any loving pet owner.

Whether you’re dealing with an emergency, scheduling routine exams, arranging dog grooming, or looking for trustworthy cat boarding before a trip, the search can feel overwhelming.

So, If you’re looking for the best animal hospitals in Philadelphia, you’ll be glad to know that our city has several strong veterinary options.

I narrowed this list to clinics that offer dependable care, practical services, and enough support to help your dogs, cats, and other companions stay healthy.

1. Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency (PASE)

philadelphia-animal-specialty-emergency

Website: https://www.pase.vet/

Address: 2100 Washington Avenue

Contact: (267) 727-3738

Hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

When a pet emergency happens late at night, having a hospital that stays open around the clock can make a scary situation feel a little more manageable.

Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency (PASE) combines emergency medicine, specialty care, and critical support in one privately owned facility.

My neighbor once rushed her golden retriever here after a sudden late-night scare, and she was relieved that specialists were available right away.

I also like that PASE partners with NorthStar VETS, which gives pet owners access to a broader specialty network for serious cases.

However, pet parents should be prepared for sticker shock, as some clients report that emergency treatment bills can exceed initial estimates.

Pros

  • Open 24/7 for year-round emergency availability
  • Comprehensive specialty services under one roof
  • On-site critical care specialists available daily
  • Multidisciplinary, board-certified veterinary team

Cons

  • Potential for high or variable treatment costs
  • Mixed service consistency during busy hours

They have been amazing

We have been bringing Bogie over here from South Jersey for B Cell lymphoma treatments. The news of our 4 year old Bogie having cancer was devastating but today thanks to the team there with Dr Davis, Laura and so many others Bogie graduated his chemotherapy treatments. They have been amazing from the front desk answering our many phone calls, the friendly staff when we get there, and the amazing techs and doctors helping us through this. Would highly recommend the Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency Hospital.

Wonderfully kind and caring

They are absolutely the best at what they do. Don’t hesitate to bring your pet here. We are lucky to have such amazing specialists in this city. The people at reception are wonderfully kind and caring and really take it to the next level to help you out. Prices are discussed at length and beforehand so you know what you’re getting into. I’m so glad to have found this animal hospital!

2. Philadelphia Animal Hospital

philadelphia-animal-hospital

Website: https://philadelphiaanimalhospital.com/

Address: 7401 Holstein Ave.

Contact: (215) 392-3724

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Philadelphia Animal Hospital is a good fit if you want a long-running neighborhood clinic with broad services in one place.

The practice has served the area for more than 30 years and is led by a father-daughter team, which gives it a more familiar, community-based feel.

I like that they cover routine wellness visits, surgery, dental care, and in-house diagnostics, so families do not have to bounce between clinics for every concern.

They even have a therapeutic swimming pool, which is a standout for pets that need rehabilitation or low-impact exercise.

The catch is that busy scheduling can be frustrating. For instance, some clients report long waits, delayed updates, and occasional prescription follow-up issues.

Pros

  • Comprehensive veterinary services in one location
  • Urgent care available during regular business hours
  • In-house diagnostics for quick treatment decisions
  • Established local practice serving for over 30 years

Cons

  • Long wait times despite scheduled appointments
  • Inconsistent communication regarding delays
  • Administrative follow-up gaps for prescriptions

Customer Reviews

Always so pleasant and kind

The staff at Phila Animal Hospital are always so pleasant and kind. Great office. Dr. Larry Rebbechi is awesome! Brownie was a 10 pound malnourished rescue when we got him in 2022. Now he’s 18 pounds and very happy.

Taught me how to better care for and manage his conditions

I have a 20-year-old cat with four chronic illnesses, including kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, and a heart murmur, and I’m so grateful to the vets at Philly Animal Hospital for giving Sunny the best care since 2007. Not only are they great vets, especially Dr. Rebecchi and Dr. Chung, who’ve seen this ginger boy the most, but they’ve taught me how to better care for and manage his conditions. My mom also brings her cats here, too!

3. University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital Emergency Wing

Website: https://www.vet.upenn.edu/

Address: 3900 Spruce Street

Contact: (215) 746-8911, Emergencies; (215) 746-8387, Appointments

Hours: Available 24/7

For severe trauma or complicated illnesses, the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital Emergency Wing has the depth that many smaller clinics can’t match.

For starters, this Ivy League teaching hospital provides 24/7 emergency services and is certified as a Level One Trauma Center by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.

I also appreciate that cases can draw support from board-certified specialists, intensive care teams, and advanced diagnostic technology in the same system.

Overall, the academic setup here can be a real advantage when a pet needs more than routine care.

On the downside, the hospital can feel busy and clinical. Some pet owners say getting timely status updates during emergency shifts can be difficult.

Pros

  • Certified Level One Trauma Center capability
  • Round-the-clock emergency and critical care
  • Extensive specialty and multidisciplinary services
  • Access to advanced technology and academic expertise

Cons

  • Limited communication and patient status updates
  • Perceived gaps in standard diagnostic testing
  • Front desk customer service variability

My cat seemed to do really well

Their operations for the hospital seem to be set up to allow ample time for each animal intake. The staff seem busy at work but cultivate a patient demeanor at the same time while dealing with animals and their guardians. My cat seemed to do really well with their internal medicine and imaging teams. I am very grateful that such a facility exists in Philly for animals.

Were able to do the best thing

They took care of my pet and he was very sick. I took him to BluePearl before there and they did nothing for him. The vets were amazing and explained everything that was wrong with my fur baby and we were able to do the best thing, to put him to sleep. If not for them my dog would have suffered even more because of the poor excuse of a vet hospital called Blue Pearl Animal Hospital. Thank you to all the doctors and vet techs at this hospital.

4. Washington Ave Animal Hospital

washington-ave-animal-hospital

Website: https://www.washingtonavevet.com/

Address: 1920 Washington Ave

Contact: (267) 651-9341

Hours: Monday-Saturday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Washington Ave Animal Hospital works well for pet owners who want a modern South Philadelphia clinic with urgent appointment options.

I recently took my adopted rescue cat here after a sudden illness, and what stood out most was how clearly the staff explained the plan.

They offer routine care, dental work, surgery, and same-day or next-day urgent visits, which is helpful when something feels too serious to wait.

The clinic also puts a strong emphasis on client education, so you aren’t left guessing about next steps at home.

I’m just iffy about their billing transparency. Some clients have mentioned unexpected charges, higher bills, and slower responses to billing questions.

Pros

  • Full-service coverage including dental and surgery
  • Same-day or next-day urgent care availability
  • Modern practice utilizing updated clinical technology
  • Strong emphasis on client education and communication

Cons

  • Concerns about billing transparency and unexpected fees
  • Customer service delays for administrative inquiries
  • Perception of higher pricing or upselling

They really care about our fur babies

I took my babies in for a wellness visit and Dr. Adams came in and my baby Bella started spinning around and hopping, playing with her. I never seen my baby get so excited like she knew the doctor her whole life. I love taking them to Washington Avenue Animal Hospital. The doctors and the techs really care about our fur babies. Bella and Chloe.

Will continue to bring my cats

My two cats are regular clients but one Saturday I had a concern about one of them and called the animal hospital. They advised bringing her in and scheduled an appointment that morning. The doctor and her assistant took their time with the cat and answered all of my questions. They were wonderful with the cat and me! The cat got the needed care and a couple days after treatment was fully recovering. I will continue to bring my cats to this animal hospital for the excellent care provided.

5. Center City Veterinary Hospital

center-city-veterinary-hospital

Website: https://www.centercityvet.com/

Address: 37 South 3rd Street

Contact: (215) 923-2284

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM; Friday, 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Center City Veterinary Hospital is especially appealing if your pet gets nervous at the vet or needs more than standard dog and cat care.

The clinic uses a low-stress handling approach, which can make appointments easier for anxious animals. I also like that they treat exotic pets, so bird, reptile, and small mammal owners have a central Philadelphia option that isn’t limited to cats and dogs.

Plus, their focus on preventive wellness and digital tools for records and prescription requests makes routine care easier to manage.

Despite these excellent amenities, a few clients have raised concerns about inconsistent communication, professionalism, and additional fees for expedited urgent appointments.

Pros

  • Care for multiple animal types including exotic pets
  • Low-stress handling certified practice for anxious pets
  • Strong focus on long-term preventive wellness
  • Convenient digital tools for scheduling and records

Cons

  • Additional fees for urgent or expedited visits
  • Concerns regarding inconsistent diagnostic accuracy
  • Variable communication professionalism

Took great care of my pet

Dr. Meister and his staff are the best. My cat needed some teeth pulled and I had previously lost an animal a long time ago at a different vet who had to do a similar surgery. I was very worried and Dr. Meister communicated well and took great care of my pet.

Very kind, focused and animal-centered

Everyone jumped into action quickly when I brought my dog in for an emergency visit close to closing time. He had been choking on a bone in my home and they took him quickly for an evaluation. Luckily, he passed it on his own without intervention as soon as they saw him. Everyone here was very kind, focused and animal-centered. Thank you to the team!
