The 5 Best Barbershops in Philadelphia Locals Trust

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Service Quality and Consistency: We evaluated the technical precision of the haircuts and beard trims offered at each location. Shops that maintained high standards across different staff members ranked better.

Environment and Atmosphere: A good grooming session should feel comfortable, not rushed or awkward. We looked for barbershops with welcoming spaces, thoughtful amenities, and a relaxed waiting experience.

Booking Flexibility: Getting a time slot should be easy for students, professionals, and anyone with a packed week. We gave extra credit to places that balance scheduled appointments with some walk-in availability.

Range of Offerings: Modern grooming often goes beyond a simple buzz cut. We highlighted shops with broader menus, including hot towel shaves, beard trims, and specialized styling packages.

Finding the best barbershop in Philadelphia can feel like a small mission, especially when you want a cut that actually matches your style.

When you encounter a good barber, he makes you feel sharper before class, work, a wedding, or a big night out.

It actually feels a bit like finding reliable personal trainers for your fitness routine or golf coaches for your swing, because the right expert can change your confidence.

So, I looked at local shops that stand out for fades, beard trims, shaves, atmosphere, and ease of booking, helping you narrow the search without wasting a weekend.

How much does a haircut in a barbershop cost in Philadelphia?

1. The Philadelphia Barber Co. – Northern Liberties

Website: https://www.thephiladelphiabarberco.com/

Address: 1106 N Front St

Contact: (215) 786-1106

Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM; Saturday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

The Philadelphia Barber Co. in Northern Liberties blends classic barbering with a modern, social feel.

The shop has the kind of lounge-like energy that makes a short wait feel less annoying, especially with complimentary drinks and a staff that seems comfortable with different hair textures.

I like that it feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a quick errand. The team also hosts after-hours events like comedy shows, which gives the place a fun community edge.

I’m just quite iffy regarding some consistency issues, though. Some customers have noticed that the final cut can depend heavily on which barber you book, so I wouldn’t treat every chair as interchangeable.

Once you find someone who understands your fade, beard shape, or texture, sticking with that person is probably the safest move.

Pros

  • Complimentary drinks and relaxed atmosphere
  • Accommodates all hair types and textures
  • Hosts after-hours social entertainment
  • Convenient online and phone booking

Cons

  • Inconsistent haircut quality between visits

I will be returning!

Finding a new barber is hard after going to the same person for years. After trying different spots, Hannah made me feel right at home, making great conversation and making sure I was happy with how she was cutting my hair throughout the appointment. Very happy with her and think I will be returning!

I’ve been very happy with my cuts

I have been here a few times and I really enjoy the vibes! Decor is great. Everyone is quite friendly and I’ve been very happy with my cuts from Vic, who I recommend. His fades are on point. Prices are competitive if not better than places in this area. Parking can be a bit tough at times, so would recommend coming a bit earlier if you are driving.

2. Barber on 24th

Website: https://barberon24th.com/

Address: 2401 Lombard Street

Contact: 215-732-7797

Hours: Monday, 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Tuesday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Barber on 24th is the kind of shop that works well when you want more than a basic trim but still want a relaxed neighborhood feel.

Their menu covers traditional hot towel shaves, young men’s cuts, skin fades, beard shaping, and facial grooming, so it’s easy to keep everything in one visit.

What stood out to me is the attention to detail. The barbers seem especially focused on checking the shape and finish before the cape comes off, which matters when you’re trying to settle into a new shop.

The loyalty program is also a nice bonus if you plan to return regularly. Given all the good things, it’s no surprise that they’re so popular.

That said, walk-in visits can be hard to count on, so booking ahead with a preferred barber is the better move. Plus, the service quality may vary depending on who is available.

Pros

  • Extensive weekday evening availability
  • Family-friendly service menu
  • Rewarding customer loyalty program
  • Traditional hot towel shaves offered

Cons

  • High demand limits walk-in opportunities
  • Service quality fluctuates among different staff

Makes sure that every part of your hair is to your liking

Was trying to find a place after moving for college and after visiting some shops. This has been a great experience. Brennen is an amazing barber, he listens and makes sure that every part of your hair is to your liking. He’ll ask multiple times to make sure it’s perfect so it’s not that awkward acceptance like most barber places. The place was cozy and chill and in a great area if you want some coffee right after your cut.

Fantastic, attentive, and always does a perfect job

I’ve been going to Barber on 24th with my son for a couple of years now, and it’s truly become our barbershop. The staff are always super friendly, the atmosphere is great, and the service is consistently excellent. Mike is our barber. He’s fantastic, attentive, and always does a perfect job. We absolutely love this place and highly recommend it!

3. Barbershop Denim

Website: https://barbershopdenimphilly.com/

Address: 1517 South Street

Contact: (267) 930-3980

Hours: Monday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Tuesday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Barbershop Denim has a laid-back South Street feel, and I can see why it works for people who want something personal without a stiff salon vibe.

Every haircut here includes a signature razor neck shave, which makes even a simple cut feel a little more finished.

The shop also offers both walk-in and online scheduling, so it has some flexibility if your week changes fast. I also like that the staff seems comfortable tailoring cuts to individual goals instead of rushing through a standard template.

The main issue I noted is communication during the service. A few clients have felt surprised by added grooming steps or choices that weren’t clearly explained first.

Still, those several instances don’t erase the strong atmosphere. It does mean you should speak up early about exactly what you want, though.

Pros

  • Signature razor neck shave included
  • Flexible walk-in and online scheduling
  • Relaxed South Street location
  • Detail-oriented personalized cutting approach

Cons

  • Poor communication during active haircuts
  • Unprompted grooming additions sometimes applied

Very welcoming

My son and I had a great experience at Barbershop Denim. Our barber, Chris, was funny, really good, and very accommodating with some local recommendations. The atmosphere was great, and I really enjoyed everyone getting into the discussion and listening to everyone’s perspectives. That was one of the things that made the atmosphere awesome. It was very welcoming, and we will 100% return if we ever make it back to Philadelphia.

Did a really nice job

On an unexpected business trip to Phila., I needed a haircut before a client visit. It felt risky to let anyone different than my normal stylist do the cutting. The owner did the work first thing in the morning and did a really nice job. It was detailed, exactly what I wanted, and appropriate to my age and profession. The place was immaculate, and he was a fun conversationalist.

4. BURKE & PAYNE Barber Co.

Website: https://burkepaynebarber.com/

Address: 734 S. 9th Street

Contact: 215-922-0299

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

BURKE & PAYNE Barber Co. fits its Italian Market location well because it feels rooted, classic, and very local.

The family-owned shop has been operating since 2013, and that long-running neighborhood presence gives it a different feel from trendier newer spots.

I like that their menu stays focused on core barbering while still making room for sensory-friendly cuts for children. Their weekday evening hours are also helpful if you’re squeezing in a cut after work.

The tradeoff is that pricing sits a little higher for standard services than some smaller neighborhood shops. The traditional focus may also feel limited if you want a more experimental salon-style experience.

But for a polished, straightforward cut in a reliable setting, this shop remains a strong pick.

Pros

  • Long-standing local community presence
  • Convenient Italian Market location
  • Sensory-friendly haircut options for children
  • Extended evening operating hours

Cons

  • Higher pricing for standard services
  • Traditional service focus may feel limited

Like a master barber should!

I came in, and Stevie took care of me right away. Extremely friendly guy, and the conversation was off the chart. We went from talking about sports to Pokémon cards to Stranger Things. For a bald guy, he brought my confidence all the way up. My beard was looking rough, and he sharpened it up like a master barber should. God bless that man’s hands.

Incredibly skilled barber

I recently started going to Nate and couldn’t be happier with the experience. He’s an incredibly skilled barber who leverages his keen eye for photography to deliver a precise cut every time. Beyond that, he’s a genuinely great conversationalist, which makes every appointment enjoyable. What really impressed me was how he went above and beyond by recommending skin and scalp treatments that have made a real difference.

5. The King of Shave

Website: https://www.thekingofshave.com/

Address: 1201 Pine St

Contact: 215 732 2900

Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Sunday, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM

The King of Shave leans fully into old-school grooming, and that’s exactly why they’re so appealing. The Pine Street shop feels more like a classic shave house than a rushed haircut stop.

I loved seeing premium touches like avocado masks, head massages, curated music, and traditional shaving services.

Plus, their team brings decades of barbering experience, and the hygiene standards are reassuring. Fresh blades for every customer interaction are a small detail, but they matter a lot when shaving is part of the service.

That said, the results can still depend on who handles your cut. A few visitors have had issues with fade blending or felt the final style didn’t fully match the reference.

It’s best to come here for the shave experience, but be very specific if you want a technical fade.

Pros

  • Spa-like additions to traditional shaves
  • Decades of multi-state barbering expertise
  • Relaxing atmosphere with curated music
  • Strict hygiene and fresh blade policies

Cons

  • Inconsistent technical execution on fades
  • Final results sometimes ignore customer references

I always leave feeling my spirits uplifted

Always a fantastic experience at King of Shave. Excellent cuts at a fair price in a classic barber shop setting with some of the most warm and genuine barbers around. And even beyond the expert haircut, I always leave feeling my spirits uplifted. Thank you, King of Shave!

Warm and welcoming, professional

Had my cut with Gene. This is my third time coming to King of Shave. It is not your normal barber shop. I have had my haircut from Diego, Gene, and Ryan, and all of them are fabulous. Warm and welcoming, professional, great conversations, and super efficient. They make you feel like family, and this place is absolutely worth it.
