We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Medical Expertise and Credentials: We looked closely at the training, surgical backgrounds, and board certifications of each medical team. Deep clinical knowledge matters a lot when delicate eye procedures are on the table.

Advanced Treatment and Technology: We checked for modern diagnostic equipment and current surgical options at each clinic. Up-to-date tools tend to mean more accurate diagnoses and smoother recovery times.

Patient Care and Communication: We assessed how clearly the staff explains complex medical situations and answer questions. A supportive environment lowers stress and helps you understand your treatment plan.

Pricing and Insurance Acceptance: We looked at how openly each practice shares its fees and how widely it accepts major regional insurance. Clear financial terms help families budget without surprise bills.

The right eye doctor can genuinely change how you handle your vision for years to come.

Maybe you’re facing a stressful new diagnosis, or maybe you’re just following up on a referral. Either way, finding a skilled ophthalmologist in Philadelphia makes all the difference.

Specialized healthcare gets a lot less intimidating when you have clear, honest insights to guide your choice. So we dug into the local options to find the eye doctors who actually earn that trust, visit after visit.

Doctor was amazing

Very experienced and  professional service. Accommodation was made for me when I was late due to traffic. Appointment times are honored with no long wait periods. Very kind, patient, knowledgeable, and hardworking staff. Doctor was amazing and so warm!! My experience was seemless in and out in about 1 hour. Would absolutely recommend this office.

Recommended

Dr. Repke is empathetic and extremely competent. She performed 2 cataract surgeries on meand each eye needed an in-office laser post surgical procedure which made my vision crisp. I have occasionally needed an emergency treatment for conjunctivitis over the years and the office has responded even when Dr. Repke wasn’t available. So l recommend both the doctor and the office.

If you want a really tailored medical experience, City Ophthalmology builds everything around an individualized approach.

That patient-first philosophy guides lead physician Dr. Vincent Lam, MD, as he maps out specific recovery plans for serious conditions like macular degeneration and diabetic eye complications.

Beyond standard eye care, the office also handles cosmetic treatments such as Botox injections, dermal fillers, and reconstructive eyelid surgery.

That kind of range is genuinely useful when you want one trusted office to cover multiple needs instead of bouncing between specialists.

Its central location also makes it easy to stop by other providers, like orthopedic specialists in Philadelphia, on the same afternoon.

Parking is straightforward, and most appointments stay close to their scheduled time, which makes weekday visits a lot less stressful.

Just keep in mind that they don’t accept vision insurance, so you’ll have to pay out of pocket. It’s worth calling ahead to confirm pricing on specific procedures before you book.

Pros

  • Specializes in pterygium and advanced cataract surgery
  • Localized cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid treatments
  • Positioned in the center of downtown
  • Detailed diabetic eye care assessments

Cons

Wonderful experience

Office was clean and welcoming. Wonderful experience. Staff was friendly and professional. Answered all my questions. I was seeing another eye doctor previously and this was my first visit at this practice. Dr. Perry was wonderful. She listened to my problem… made several suggestions. There is even a staff member who will help me maneuver my insurance. With the correction prescribed I see better  than I have in years.

Their medical staff includes fellowship-trained ophthalmic surgeons like Dr. Yelena Doych and Dr. Vipin K. Goyal, who focus on difficult corneal diseases.

They offer premium intraocular lens (IOL) options for complex cataract surgeries and provide direct care in both English and Russian.

5. Eye Surgical Medical Associates

eye-surgical-medical-associates

Website: http://eyesurgicalmedical.com/

Address: 8118 Bustleton Ave.

Contact: (215) 342-8118

Hours: Monday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Tuesday-Wednesday 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Thursday 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Eye Surgical Medical Associates was founded over 35 years ago by Dr. Mustapha Shayegan, who built a full medical eye practice serving patients across the region. That kind of staying power says a lot about the quality of care they consistently deliver.

One of our researchers recently took his elderly mother to this office for a specialized exam and shared that the clinical environment felt professional. The staff took the time to explain every step, which made the whole visit a lot less stressful for them.

They offer modern surgical solutions, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), which they perform right inside their own Liberty Surgical Center. Handling procedures in-house keeps the whole care experience streamlined and consistent.

The practice clearly accepts many major health insurance providers, including Medicare and Keystone First plans.

However, their hours shift quite a bit through the week, which can make scheduling tricky if you need a consistent weekly appointment.

Pros

  • Advanced MIGS options for glaucoma patients
  • Independent, modern surgical center
  • Accepts major plans like Medicare and Keystone First
  • Thorough clinical tracking for diabetic eye care

Cons

  • Hours vary throughout the week
  • Scheduling can take some planning

So impressed

I went today for my first visit. I called with a concern this morning and they got me in immediately. Every single person I encountered was friendly, polite and an overall delight!  The Doctor is an absolute gem. Truly don’t understand how this place could receive anything less than a 5 star review. I was so impressed that this will be my new eye doctor from here on out. Great job, Eye Surgical! ♥

Phenomenal doctor and person

Dr. Sponberg is probably the sweetest, kindest physician in ANY practice/specialty that I have ever been a patient of in my life. I sometimes wish he was a general practitioner, he takes his time & listens to his patients. It’s very refreshing in a world where most providers rush you in and out. He is a phenomenal doctor and person. The staff is very kind too. And Mr Jerry of course is so kind and helpful when it comes time to select the hardware. I love this facility.
