Navigating a new city’s educational system can feel incredibly overwhelming, especially when you are aiming for a genuinely global experience for your children. As a parent, you want a school environment that respects their background while still challenging them academically.
Expat families settling into the East Coast, along with local families looking for a multilingual advantage, often face a tough decision. Finding the best international school in Philadelphia takes real research, especially when you’re balancing commute times and curriculum styles.
To make that easier, we put together a guide to help you compare top international schools in Philadelphia and find a multicultural classroom that feels like the right fit for your family.

1. French International School

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM–5 PM
You don’t need to speak a single word of French at home to give your child a truly bilingual foundation. French International School actually combines the official national curriculum of France with Pennsylvania state standards.
This immerses kids in French for 90% of their day during preschool. It’s a fantastic setup because they eventually introduce Spanish and Latin, meaning graduates often leave with solid language skills.
We actually spoke with a relocating family who enrolled their daughter here, and they loved the personalized attention. But, they did admit that the physical location presents a real logistical challenge for city residents. The campus is out in Bala Cynwyd, creating a long daily commute.
Plus, the high $26,000 annual tuition adds a heavy financial barrier.
2. International Christian High School

Address: 5500 Tabor Ave., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM–4 PM
Fostering genuine cultural exchange is the main focus at the International Christian High School. They intentionally aim for a student body that is 30% international and 70% local.
We love this setup because it builds an environment where teenagers learn directly from diverse backgrounds while maintaining a strong Biblical foundation.
The administration is even fully authorized to issue I-20 forms under federal law. This means they actively help overseas students secure visas and settle with local host families.
This direct support is a huge relief for parents trying to navigate international logistics.
On top of that, the dedicated teachers often provide enough mentorship to reduce the need for outside tutoring.
However, the urban setting means they operate out of a smaller two-floor building, which limits physical space for big sports programs.
Plus, the recently updated uniform requirements add a noticeably pricey out-of-pocket expense on top of regular tuition.
3. Independence Charter School

Address: 1600 Lombard Street Philadelphia, PA 19146

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 AM–5 PM
Getting access to a globally-minded education does not always require an expensive private tuition bill. Independence Charter School is a public charter school that runs a comprehensive Spanish immersion program.
Here, early learners receive up to 90% of their instruction in Spanish before balancing out in later grades.
On top of that, they actively teach kids to challenge stereotypes and understand their place in the world through community-centered academic projects.
It’s a great alternative for families wanting diverse classrooms without the heavy financial burden. Some kids, though, might still need supplemental math tutors to stay sharp on core subjects during the language transition.
A major downside is the highly unpredictable admission process, as getting a seat relies entirely on a luck-of-the-draw annual lottery. Even if you secure a spot, you might face daily commutes of up to 45 minutes to reach the Center City location.
4. Mi Casita Spanish Immersion Preschool

Address: 2601 Poplar St. Philadelphia, PA 19130
Contact: 215-305-4141
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM–6 PM
Introducing a second language during a child’s peak developmental window gives them a massive cognitive head start.
Mi Casita Spanish Immersion Preschool is an early learning center that skips repetitive worksheets and dives straight into full Spanish immersion from day one. They use a project-based curriculum where kids tackle engaging, real-world topics.
The extremely low 1:5 teacher-to-student ratio ensures that every toddler gets highly personalized attention throughout the day.
One parent we spoke with was thrilled with the monthly vocabulary lists that helped her daughter practice the themes at home.
But, you should be aware that their rigid enrollment policies legally lock families into a financial commitment through June. Infants are also strictly required to attend five days a week.
The highly specialized program also comes with a premium price tag that can easily exceed $33,000 for full-time care.

We love Mi Casita. The teachers are so sweet and we are always amazed at the progress our kiddo is making at school. The Spanish-immersion experience has been educational for our entire family. Our kid is always so excited to go to school and returns tuckered out, but happy. We are grateful to be a part of the Mi Casita family.

5. Petite Ecole Bilingue

Address: 2133 Arch Street Lower Atrium Philadelphia, PA 19103
Contact: 215-568-1158 | [email protected]
Hours: Hours may vary
Petite Ecole Bilingue stands out as a rare French-American preschool offering a fully bilingual early education environment in the city.
The program is structured in a way that combines international curriculum standards with local educational requirements. This gives children consistent exposure to both languages during key developmental years.
The school is even tied to a larger cultural institute, so parents can jump into adult language classes or travel services.
The main drawback is the physical setting itself. The classrooms are situated in the lower atrium of a large commercial building, meaning they lack abundant natural light.
The downtown location on Arch Street also forces parents to navigate stressful street parking without a private drop-off zone.

If I could give this school a score, I would give it more than 5 stars. Mr. Lee, the staff and the teachers are all incredible people. They changed the lives of our children. They are consistent, have an excellent French-inspiring teaching plan, foster excellence, are pushing children academically, and are just incredible human beings all-around. I would recommend this preschool to everyone I know.

Petite Ecole Bilingue is just excellent. My first daughter spent 2 years there and is now in Kindergarten. Besides being fluent in both languages, her math/writing/reading skills are way above average. Small school that focuses on education through social manners and education. My yougest daughter is still going to PEB and she loves it. I can only give a 200% to this great school.
