I actually had a quick chat with Anthony, the owner, recently to see how they handle their custom builds. They don’t just slap a generic filter on your line; they offer everything from Reverse Osmosis (RO) to Ultraviolet (UV) sterilizers based on free water testing they do right on-site.
On top of that, they can repair almost any brand of equipment you already have, which is super flexible.
Just a heads-up, though: their phone lines are currently a bit of a mess because of a carrier error. Since it’s just a two-person team, their daily scheduling capacity is also a bit tighter than that of massive fleets.

They’re a massive operation with a huge physical hub on Frankford Ave, meaning they have the logistical muscle to get a truck to your door the same day you call. They carry a ton of different water softeners specifically designed to protect older Philly pipes from the calcium and magnesium buildup common in local water.
However, they’re definitely more of a general plumbing powerhouse than a niche water laboratory.
Also, they won’t give you a price over the phone at all; a technician has to physically drive out to your place before you get a firm quote. This can be a bit of a bottleneck if you’re just trying to compare prices quickly.

It’s pretty rare to find a local outfit that keeps three full-time master plumbers on staff, but that’s exactly why these guys stand out. City Plumbing has a strict policy against using subcontractors, so you’re always dealing with their actual employees who have been vetted for quality.
Just like choosing between the best masonry contractors for your home, picking a plumber requires looking at their long-term certifications, and these guys hold specific Lead and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certs.
Their trucks are basically moving warehouses, so they usually have everything they need for a full installation right there, which cuts down on annoying delays.
However, one thing to keep in mind is that they don’t have a physical showroom where you can go browse different systems.
Also, because they cover such a huge area, their schedule for non-emergency water softener installs can sometimes get a bit backed up.

The family-run Plumbing Pals takes a “no-frills, no-fuss” approach to their work, which I really appreciate when I just want the job done right without a big sales pitch.
I’ve spoken to a few people who really swear by their flat-rate pricing model because it eliminates that annoying sticker shock at the end of a project.
They operate out of three different hubs across the area, so they have a solid dispatch network to get to you quickly.
They handle the big stuff like UV purification for bacteria and whole-home softeners to prevent scale buildup in your appliances.
But just like some of the other big names, they have a hard rule against giving estimates over the phone. You have to get them on-site to get a real number, which is a bit of a pain for comparison shoppers.
On top of that, it’s not entirely clear if they provide full in-house lab testing or if you need to handle that step separately.

However, the corporate structure can sometimes lead to scheduling hiccups, like technicians showing up without the right supplies.
