The 5 Best Gyms in Philadelphia to Reach Your Fitness Goals

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Equipment Variety: I checked the quality and range of strength and cardio machines at each location. A wide selection means you can finish your routine without waiting around for the basic gear.

Membership Flexibility: I looked closely at contract terms and signup fees to find places that respect your wallet. I gave priority to gyms with straightforward month-to-month plans or transparent cancellation policies.

Facility Cleanliness: I assessed how well the staff maintains the workout floors, locker rooms, and recovery areas. A clean environment makes daily exercise feel a lot less stressful.

Extra Amenities: I looked at perks like saunas, group classes, and shake bars that add real value to a basic membership. These features help support your wellness routine beyond just lifting weights.

Finding the right place to break a sweat can feel like a chore, especially when you’re juggling a hectic schedule.

You might be a seasoned lifter chasing a new personal record, or a complete beginner just trying to build a consistent habit.

Luckily, the local fitness scene has some great spaces that cater to every type of workout style.

To save you the headache of endless trial memberships, I tracked down the spots that pair good gear with a welcoming environment. Here are the best gyms in Philadelphia for your fitness goals.

How much does a gym membership cost in Philadelphia?

A gym membership in Philadelphia costs $10 to $200+ per month, depending on whether you choose a budget-friendly club or a premium luxury facility with extras like saunas and pools.

Gym TypeEstimated Monthly Cost
Budget-friendly clubs$10 – $25
Mid-tier facilities and studios$50 – $100+
Premium luxury wellness clubs$200+

1. City Fitness – Fairmount

city-fitness-fairmount

Website: https://cityfitnessphilly.com/

Address: 2112 Fairmount Avenue

Contact: (267) 534-3435 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 5:00 AM-10:00 PM; Friday, 5:00 AM-9:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 6:00 AM-8:00 PM

This massive multi-floor facility feels like a neighborhood hangout. City Fitness – Fairmount runs an expansive 16,000-square-foot location that mixes a tight-knit community feel with an open turf training area.

The space features custom-engineered studio classes alongside built-in luxury recovery tools like dry saunas.

During my afternoon visit last month, the welcoming vibe was easy to notice as local lifters chatted with the friendly staff. You can also grab a custom protein drink at the internal shake bar right after a tough session.

On the flip side, keeping your routine flexible can get pricey here. The entry-level plan restricts you to this single location instead of giving access to their other local spots.

On top of that, specific recovery tools vary if you decide to upgrade your tier to check out their other neighborhoods.

Pros

  • Eight local neighborhood locations
  • Spacious multi-floor layout
  • Premium saunas and massage lounges
  • Free perks on entry-level plans

Cons

  • Base plan limits you to one club
  • Inconsistent amenities across locations

Incredibly clean and welcoming

Great hours. Incredibly clean. Equipment is new and state of the art. The staff is welcoming and helpful. It’s a fantastic gym and it’s been so cool to see their business grow since those early days at 2nd and Spring Garden. You can’t expand like they have unless you have a killer product and A+ people. They’ve got both. Highly recommend.

Patient and encouraging training staff

Impressed with the facilities and both trainers I have worked with so far. The gym clientele skews on the young side so they need more middle aged women like me to make the place fun. Great workouts in Thrive and very patient and encouraging training staff. Special shout out to Natasja and McGovern. The variety of classes also keeps things fresh, and I never feel intimidated walking in even on the busy days.

2. Fusion Gyms

Address: 2801 Grant Ave

Contact: (215) 821-3451 | [email protected]

Hours: Available 24/7

Skipping long contract commitments is a huge relief when you’re hunting for a reliable training space. Fusion Gyms stands out by offering month-to-month freedom with zero signup fees and continuous access to all their regional spots.

Heavy lifters will love the massive inventory of professional strength gear, including over twenty squat racks and premium recovery tools. The 24/7 schedule also means you can squeeze in a workout at almost any hour without worrying about closing time.

Just keep in mind that their network is regional, so you’re out of luck if you travel outside the immediate area. Unique perks like the outdoor setup vary heavily by branch, and you have to submit a strict thirty-day written notice before canceling your plan.

Pros

  • 24/7 gym access
  • No long-term contracts or fees
  • Over twenty heavy squat racks
  • Free saunas and cold plunges

Cons

  • Limited to local regional network

Felt welcomed from the start

Honestly one of the best gyms in Philly if not the best. The staff and management were so kind in showing me around the gym, I really felt welcomed here. The environment is great too. It really does set the mood for your lift unlike other commercial gyms I’ve been to. The members are friendly, the floor is rarely too packed even at peak hours, and there is enough variety in equipment to keep my training program interesting week after week.

Everything you could want or need

There’s no other gym like this! The staff is so friendly and is always on top of things! With the best equipment, great community, a clean gym and Revive Hive inside the facility, it has everything you could want or need! I did have an issue with my account at one point, but when I spoke to management about it, they handled it and got it settled immediately! There is nowhere else I’d rather train at.

3. The Sporting Club at The Bellevue

Website: https://www.sportingclubbellevue.com/

Address: 224 S Broad St, Floor 8

Contact: (215) 985-9876 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 5:00 AM-10:00 PM; Friday, 5:00 AM-9:00 PM; Saturday, 7:00 AM-8:00 PM; Sunday, 8:00 AM-7:00 PM

I’m relieved to find this expansive wellness environment right in the middle of downtown. Inside a historic center city building, The Sporting Club at The Bellevue is a luxury club with an impressive athletic complex featuring court sports and an Olympic pool.

They even include specialized Pilates Reformer sessions within the standard dues alongside plenty of weekly classes. The mix of recovery amenities and group programming makes it easier to plan a workout that goes beyond just basic lifting.

However, enjoying this premium environment requires a real financial investment. The monthly fees are well above standard commercial spots around town. Driving here is also tough, since parking is managed by a separate company and requires an extra daily fee.

Pros

  • Massive downtown luxury facility
  • Full athletic courts and pool
  • Included pilates reformer classes
  • Central transit-friendly location

Cons

  • Expensive premium membership tiers
  • Parking requires separate daily fees

More than a gym

Hands down the best gym in the city. It’s more than a gym, with so many amenities such as basketball gym, golf simulators, pool, sauna, barbershop, cafe, rooftop lounges and more. The staff, especially Thea who gave us tours and helped with the sign up, is incredible. Fresh towels, clean, attentive and always saying good morning. Not sure where the negative reviews come from, never an issue with scheduling or getting on machines, always a healthy balance of people here but never overly crowded.

Life-changing membership

Joining the Sporting Club has been life changing for me! It’s so much more than just a gym. The amenities really make this a great value: things like hot tub, cold plunge, sauna, rooftop deck, cafe, workspaces, etc. Also the sheer quantity and variety of classes means I can always find a class I want to do and fit it into my busy schedule. I’ve been a member of many other gyms, and I’ve never gone as consistently and got as much out of the experience as I have with the Sporting Club.

4. Fit Gym

fit-gym

Website: http://www.fitgymphilly.com/

Address: 4419 Ludlow St

Contact: (215) 386-3333 | [email protected]

Hours: Available 24/7

Finding a workout space that fits a non-traditional work schedule can be challenging.

Fit Gym is a University City staple that solves that problem by staying fully open and staffed 24 hours a day, even on major holidays.

A good friend of mine who works night shifts swears by this place because the overnight team makes the environment feel safe and motivating.

The facility also offers serious strength equipment, featuring a separate conditioning floor that’s highly recommended by local personal trainers.

That said, it might not be the most practical choice if you prefer a big regional network, since they only operate this single location. Finding open parking spaces nearby is also notoriously difficult, thanks to the dense surrounding streets.

Pros

  • Staffed 24/7 around the clock
  • Heavy-duty strength conditioning floor
  • Free access for specific residents
  • Excellent transit and subway access

Cons

  • Only one city location
  • Highly limited neighborhood parking

Customer Reviews

Feels like a community

Fit Gym has been an awesome experience. Everyone, from the trainers to the front desk, actually cares about helping members. The environment is positive, energetic, and feels like a community. I love seeing how motivated members are every day, and it’s great to be part of a place that values both fitness and people. The equipment is always kept clean and up to date, and management really listens to both staff and members. It is a great place to workout and to train.

Best shape of my life

When I lived in Philly, Albert got me in the best shape of my life right here at Fit Gym. He didn’t just reshape my body, he gave me the gift of discipline that I now benefit from in other aspects of my life. Albert gave me a whole new outlook on life and it doesn’t hurt that I now know how to use equipment I was once intimidated by. The whole staff there treats members like family, and that kind of atmosphere is hard to find at most commercial gyms.

5. Retro Fitness

retro-fitness

Website: https://retrofitness.com/

Address: 1500 Spring Garden St

Contact: (267) 519-3799 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 5:00 AM-11:00 PM; Friday, 5:00 AM-10:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 7:00 AM-7:00 PM

Balancing an active lifestyle often takes more than just standard weight machines. Retro Fitness leans into that with a specialized wellness mobile app and an advanced recovery space packed with automated massage chairs and therapeutic light tools.

If you choose their top membership tier, you can even bring a guest with you during every visit. Another good bonus is that the gym is surrounded by excellent local restaurants for a solid post-workout meal.

However, planning weekend workouts can get tricky, thanks to restrictive operating hours, since the doors close early on Saturdays and Sundays. Also, many of the best recovery perks are locked behind the most expensive plan.

Pros

  • Short-term three-month commitments
  • Over fifty pieces of strength gear
  • Unlimited guest privileges allowed
  • Advanced recovery massage chairs

Cons

  • Early closing hours on weekends
  • Basic plans lack recovery access

Walked in off the street

Man, I gotta tell you this gym is the best. I just walked in off the street and told them I had just moved here. Two gentlemen at the front desk set me up not only with a free 3-day trial, they gave me a crisp high five. I don’t know these guys at all, great facility. The vibe was friendly from the second I walked in, and the gym itself was clean and well stocked with everything I needed to keep my training going.

My go-to for travel gains

Whenever I’m in Philly, this gym is my go-to for travel gains. Clean, spacious, great music, and the staff hooked me up with a trial pass fast and a yummy protein shake. I’ll be back! The equipment was modern and well maintained, and the layout made it easy to move through a full session without getting in anyone’s way. It is the kind of place that makes sticking to a routine on the road actually feel doable.
